The Electoral College

  • Best thing today: Patriotic Change
  • Scale of how annoyed I am not too much
  • Looking forward to: America the Beautiful
Ok, this was originally an email that I tried to spread. I wrote it one Sunday afternoon when I had nothing better to do. However, I think that the important thing is to spread the idea. I also meant it to be a list, but obviously I am not going to put my name on it. So, if you want to help change America, you can start your own email list. I will not officially endorse the advertisement of this list, though.

I am trying to make a difference in this country, and to do so; I looked to the Electoral College. The system is not only obsolete; it is corrupt. I say this because I wish to see the values of the country realized. In order to do this, equality and justice must be seen. However, the Electoral College is a barrier against democracy. To use Google's definition of democracy:
  1. The principles of social equality and respect for the individual within a community.

So, obviously the democratic processes, while not totally direct, are in direct proportion for the number of yay and naysayers. It says that people must have social equality, and in a country where everybody has a say, that means they must have equal say. So, that being said, we must look to the history of the Electoral College. To be brief, it was made to give the South more representative votes for their slaves (3/5 of a vote per slave). This made it such that while the slaves themselves could not make decisions, they gave more power to their oppressors, which in turn secured their oppression. Now if we take the truth that oppression is evil, or at least against the foundations of democracy, then we can assume that the Electoral College had, at very least, corrupt beginnings.

Now, while concepts that begin in evil may yet be changed for good, the Electoral College is not so. The concept of democracy is almost completely given over to the concept of freedom and equality. Now I do not favor extremism to the point of communism, but that is beside the point. I do, however, favor the concept of equality. It must be held that people get the same opportunities or else Justice is corrupted and useless. However, because justice is necessary in a moral and equal society, we can assume that it is necessary to have. So, we need to have equality.
Now my problem with the Electoral College is that it is no longer accurate representations of the population in states (as shown by the 2000 election). However, even if the Electoral College was able to have a perfect representation of population statistics, then the only use of it would be for long hand addition. However, even then, it is another barrier between direct elections. So with another step that could be prone to corruption and mistakes, we can see that it must be eliminated.
Now that was based on the Electoral College being just. However, it is not. I see the need to put the concept of justice back to people and not just geography. The Electoral College was made to give certain rich few power in the past. We need power, but we need an equalizing of it. People need to have equal say. If they do not, then America is not the land of the free and equal, it is the land of the power mongers. If the Electoral College is allowed to exist from a past that has been abolished, then we allow the corruption of past generations to influence the world we must live in.
So, I need your help to see how popular I can make this idea. Remember that America was built by ideas and concepts that were tried and either accepted or discarded. So, I could argue that you are not a patriot if you do not spread this, but I do not need to. I believe that you truly want to eliminate corruption and make this world better. I think this because this is what I want to do. However, I cannot do this alone. One voice cannot be heard unless there are people who listen. As in the case of the birth of our nation, I ask you to take back the broken ideas of the past and either accept them or discard them. I want you to take your future into your own hands and make a better America. We need America built by people who want change for the world. However, we can see that America is changing the world already. I ask you to change it for the better.

If you agree with any of the concepts that I have presented to you, then I ask you to add your name to the list. I know many of you will not continue this, but I do ask that you give people the chance to have their voices heard. So I ask that you send this to people you know who want to make their America beautiful:

List:

Ok, now here I had a list of the people I had sent it too. I do not know if the email still exists, but I do appreciate all who answered it. Obviously, I do not have names because of privacy issues.
